traditional today is fresh, relevant, in the mix- the new traditional!
today is the first post in a series of my favorite styles of homes (i’m a fan of many). not a surprise i’m starting with traditional, it’s what i love! i love moldings, details, layers, accessories, collections, antiques- it has to be chic, glamorous and stylish! what’s not to love!
what i love even more is traditional with a touch of modern, a contemporary mix- old with a bit of new, feminine with a bit of masculine, high and low, light and dark! fresh and comfortable, relevant and relaxed! the new chic mix!
i love the mix of fabrication and textures- wood finishes with a bit of painted finishes, bronze with a bit of gilt, linen with a bit of velvet, leather with a bit of glass, solids with a few patterns! i could go on and on, but i’ll save it and you can read a few others posts on the new traditional here and here.
it’s all about the mix, all about traditional with a bit of it all- all of it chic! that’s what’s new- that’s today’s traditional!

You Featured So Many of My Favorites! That Fairchild home is perfection.
Let’s talk about that gorgeous deep ocher colour on the walls in the hampton, redd and schafer rooms…..love!
for some reason that dark blue on white floral/toile in several of the rooms is really speaking to me lately. is it just me?
oh, and that bilhuber room in the laird bridgehampton home – one of my favorite rooms ever!
thank you mark!
ps i also still have the house & garden tear sheets of the whitney home. did you know they wear renting it out a few summers ago?
Your room is my favorite of the bunch, although there are some incredible rooms here.
I used a similar shot of your house in my post today about interior photography– maybe you could shed some light on the subject?

Mark,
as a designer for over 25 years. I love your take on traditional. I always enjoy *mixing* it up…As long as we how maintain the overall
*beauty* than add pleases that are totally unexpected and turn a space into a room or home…Where one walks always thinking, “My this home is done with such good taste.”
I adore all of Miles, Yours and my dear friend & mentor the late Mark Hampton. ~MSS
